چکیده

In this chapter, we review several strands of research that share one common theme: the close conceptual and empirical links between categorization and recognition memory. We demonstrate that these links are strong, and often surprising. We explore the relation between recognition and unsupervised learning, and we investigate how perceptual processes can provide a unifying link between categorization and recognition. In Gordon Bower’s laboratory in the late 1980s and early 1990s, unsupervised learning was in the air. Several of his students were working on categorization as well as memory, and it appeared that dominant ideas in categorization research were being overturned. In particular, the traditional supervised-learning paradigm

Deep Learning with Nonparametric Clustering

Clustering is an essential problem in machine learning and data mining. One vital factor that impacts clustering performance is how to learn or design the data representation (or features). Fortunately, recent advances in deep learning can learn unsupervised features effectively, and have yielded state of the art performance in many classification problems, such as character recognition, object...

Action Categorization from Video Sequences

This article presents a framework for extracting relevant qualitative chunks from a video sequence. The notion of qualitative descriptors, used to perform the qualitative extraction, will be first described. A grouping algorithm operates on the qualitative descriptions to generate a real-time qualitative segmentation of the image flow. Then, simple pattern recognition methods are used to extrac...

Real Time Gesture Learning and Recognition: Towards Automatic Categorization

This research focuses on real-time gesture learning and recognition. Events arrive in a continuous stream without explicitly given boundaries. To obtain temporal accuracy, we need to consider the lag between the detection of an event and any effects we wish to trigger with it. Two methods for real time gesture recognition using a Nintendo Wii controller are presented. The first detects gestures...

Appearance Based Generic Object Modeling and Recognition Using Probabilistic Principal Component Analysis

Classifying unknown objects in familiar, general categories rather than trying to classify them into a certain known, but only similar class, or rejecting them at all is an important aspect in object recognition. Especially in tasks, where it is impossible to model all possibly appearing objects in advance, generic object modeling and recognition is crucial. We present a novel approach to gener...

Unsupervised Discovery of Visual Face Categories

Human faces can be arranged into different face categories using information from common visual cues such as gender, ethnicity, and age. It has been demonstrated that using face categorization as a precursor step to face recognition improves recognition rates and leads to more graceful errors. 1 Although face categorization using common visual cues yields meaningful face categories, developing ...
